Ubiquitous Computing and Monitoring System (UCoMS) for Discovery and Management of Energy Resources

This UCoMS (Ubiquitous Computing and Monitoring System) project was a major, collaborative research initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) and the Louisiana Board of Regents during August 2004 - April 2012. The project brought together researchers from UL Lafayette, LSU, and Southern University to conduct research topics centering on a computing paradigm where processing cabilities and sensing technologies are invisibly embedded into everyday objects and environments for boosting Gulf petroleum productivity and energy-resource management via "ubiquitous computing." It focused on: (1) a wireless networked system, (2) grid computing with massive computation power and storage for the discovery and management of energy resources, and (3) discovery and management applications leveraging on the UCoMS paradigm.

The project built a unified grid portal and a "Black Oil Toolkit," aiming to integrate large-scale scientific modeling, grid computing, and real-time data collection from wireless sensor networks deployed in the field. It ensured maximum utilization of petroleum fields by substantially improving oil and gas well productivity and characterizing reservoirs
